Europe & Russia Novel Project

The outcome of the project is for students to read literature in cross-curricular subjects, social studies in this case, and to complete writing or art assignments in conjunction with their reading.  Students were given books in various genres all set in either a European country or Russia since those are the units we will be covering before the winter break.  Students received all of the information for this project on Tuesday, October 25th.  Students choose a novel set in Europe or Russia from the list of titles I handed out with the project.  They read one of the novels and then choose 50 points worth of assignments to complete from a list of 34 possibilities I gave them.  I also informed students that if they have an alternate title they would prefer to read, they would need to clear that with me prior to beginning the project.  Also, I informed students that if they would like to create an assignment of their own, they could negotiate with me beforehand the point value of their chosen assignment.  They were instructed to turn in the 10 and 15 point assignments no later than Tuesday, November 15th and all other assignments no later than Monday, December 5th.  Students are allowed to submit the assignments early, but the deadlines are firm.  This project constitutes a test/project grade and as such comprises 50% of their 2nd nine weeks grade.
